Unless you've been living under a rock for the past five years, you've at least heard murmurs of Google's self-driving car, with Big G even getting California and Nevada to sign off on legislation to allow these motorist-less vehicles on the road. But now, Google is showing off their in-house manufactured vehicle, as opposed to the Prius' that doned their hardware in the past. And it's...well, it's something.
Allow me to date myself a bit, but this thing screams Urkel Car. No steering wheel, no gas or brake pedals, no problem. Previous test vehicles have already logged over 700000 miles, with these new prototypes ready to take on the next phase of testing.
In initial testing this prototype is governed at 25 MPH, but production vehicles slated for this summer will have manual control options that will, foreseeably, allow for faster driving. The aim is for a small pilot program to launch within the "next couple of years", and then of course, full adoption by the public, which will undoubtedly take quite a bit longer.
Personally, I'm ready to not worry about driving, or others driving around me. The day when drunk, distracted, and tired driving is a thing of the past will be a great day. What do you think of Google's funny-looking prototype? The concept of self-driving cars in general? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
